A note on the file extension, honestly
TikTok does not serve a native MP3. The audio it publishes is AAC inside an .m4a / .mp4 container, so TokDown labels that option "M4A · Audio Only" rather than claiming a format it is not actually handing you. M4A plays natively in Apple Music, VLC, Windows Media Player, every modern browser and every current phone — and if you specifically need an .mp3, any local converter will transcode it in seconds.
When the audio option appears
Most public posts expose a standalone audio stream. A few do not, and in that case the audio only exists welded to the video — so TokDown will list video options only rather than silently handing you a video file with an audio extension on it.

Why does it say M4A and not MP3?
Because that is what the file genuinely is. TikTok serves AAC audio in an M4A container. Calling it MP3 would be a lie about the bytes you just downloaded.
Will M4A play on my device?
Almost certainly. iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS, VLC and every modern browser play M4A without any extra software.
Can I use the audio in my own video?
That depends on the rights to the sound, which usually belong to a label or the original creator. Downloading for personal listening is different from republishing — that call is yours to make.
